New to Stan is the highly-anticipated co-production The Hack.
The Hack is a seven-part drama about the phone-hacking scandal by Murdoch-owned British newspapers. In particular, we follow The Guardian journalist Nick Davies as he uncovers one of the UK media’s biggest scandals.
It all begins when Nick (David Tennant) gets a call from the mysterious Mr Apollo (Adrian Lester), who tells him to start digging into the News of the World and their information-gathering techniques. It’s a tough sell to his editor Alan Rusbridger (Toby Jones), but once it starts, the web begins to unravel.
We also follow Metropolitan Police Detective Dave Cook (Robert Carlyle), who is tasked with investigating the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, but ends up drawing a surprising amount of tabloid attention.
Creator Jack Thorne has delved deep into both stories, with David Tennant frequently breaking the fourth wall to offer further explanations. It’s a tactic that helps tell the story, but might put some viewers off.
The scripts give Tennant and Carlyle wonderful material to work with, allowing great performances through all seven episodes.
The cast is also stacked with British talent, including Rose Leslie as lawyer Charlotte Harris, Kevin Doyle as Scotland Yard chief John Yates, and Steve Pemberton as the figure at the centre of the scandal, Rupert Murdoch.
The Hack is a complex story given its dual stories, but a story that cannot be missed.
