Mix Tape Review

Mix Tape Review

A new edition to Binge is it’s newest Aussie co-production Mix Tape.

Mix Tape tells the story of Alison (Florence Hunt) and Dan (Rory Walton-Smith) who cross paths at a part in the late 80s. There’s an undeniable spark and the pair quickly become more than friends over a love of music, with Dan making Alison mix tapes throughout their teen romance.

The duo is inseparable. But when we flash forward to present day, Dan (Jim Sturgess) is a music journalist, still based in Sheffield, and married to Katja (Sara Soulie) with a son. Meanwhile Alison (Teresa Palmer) is writer living in Sydney with two daughters and a surgeon husband, Michael (Ben Lawson).

When Alison’s novel is published, Dan reconnects with her on social media, and it’s not long before both are sending digital links to the songs from their youth.

Can the love of your youth be reignited decades later, or have life moved on too much?

Adapted by celebrated Irish writer Jo Spain, from the popular and critically-acclaimed novel by Jane Sanderson, Mix Tape juggles the dual timelines with ease and incorporates a killer soundtrack.

Palmer and Sturgess don’t share the screen a lot in the early episodes, when they do finally appear physically together, you are already so invested in their story thanks to the compelling performances by Hunt and Walton-Smith.

Mix Tape is, at its heart, a story about love and the way music can impact our lives.

This is one of the best dramas of the year.
