MasterChef Australia farewells Jess

Although Jess was apple-lauded for her nostalgic apple streusel cake, it was her dish’s lack of cohesion that saw her sent home from MasterChef Australia.

In round one of the elimination, the teams went head-to-head in the toughest MasterChef challenge yet, the relay.

The first two cooks, Jess and Sabina, learnt that the feature ingredient was apples, and both decided their team would cook a savoury dish.

The turquoise team cooked a pork tenderloin with apple compote and the judges commended them for hitting the brief. The green team plated up roast duck with parsnip purée and apple gastrique and the judges noted that the parsnip flavour overpowered the apple. Jess, Dan, Tommy and Scott were sent into round two.

The judges loved Dan’s apple sorbet and were impressed with his ability to deliver amazing dishes under pressure. They also raved about Tommy’s dish, especially the pastry and the way the apples were front and centre. Scott’s apple Charlotte cheesecake had some good elements but as a whole, the dish lacked flavour.

The judges were confused by the additional elements and flavours that Jess added to her apple streusel and although they were impressed by the cake itself, it was Jess’ lack of clarity that saw her the ninth contestant sent home from the MasterChef kitchen.
