Watson Review

Today Paramount+ releases a new take on a literary classic with Watson.

Watson is, of course, referencing Sherlock Holmes’s partner Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut), following the events of Reichenbach Falls, where Holmes and his nemesis Professor James Moriarty seemingly plunged to their deaths. In his will, Holmes leaves Watson his fortune to fund the Holmes Clinic, a cutting-edge medical facility for Watson to run.

Watson’s morally ambiguous fixer Shinwell Johnson (Ritchie Coster) is on hand to see him through the recovery of the fall, meanwhile there’s also the wife he left behind to follow Holmes, Mary Morstan (Rochelle Aytes), who appears to have moved on, and is now the medical director of the clinic.

Stepping into the exciting fresh start with the clinic, Watson assembles a team including identical twins Stephen and Adam Croft (Peter Mark Kendall), who have had a falling out because they dated the same woman, and immunologist Sasha Lubbock (Inga Schlingmann). And the most questionable appointment is Watson’s personal neurologist Ingrid Derian (Eve Harlow).

As Watson’s brain injury keeps presenting side-effect and the events of the what truly happened at the Falls remain a mystery, it appears there could be more to the story than Watson realises.

Created by Craig Sweeny, Watson gives a new take on the Sherlock story we know and love, putting the side-kick in centre-stage with intriguing cases and interesting character developments. Chestnut in particular shines as our hero, but it’s clear future instalments will allow for every character to have their moment.

Watson premieres Monday 27 January on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping weekly.
