Today, Paramount+ releases its next Australian original in Two Years Later.
Two Years Later begins with Emily (Phoebe Tonkin) and Ryan (Brenton Thwaites), whose brief, daily flirtations on their work commute may be the start of a great love story- if Ryan could ask Emily out. But he doesn’t take his shot, and the world is locked down thanks to Covid 19.
Returning to work two years later, Ryan works as an accountant, and Emily is a talented tech journalist. The pair unexpectedly reunites and reconnects, leading Ryan to impulsively propose that they go on eight dates to decide if they’re meant to be married.
The premise is simple, and it opens up the pair to a range of dates and advice from their loved ones, mostly Ryan’s grandparents, Morgan (Roy Billing) and Lorna (Heather Mitchell), who have raised Ryan since he was a child.
Are eight dates really enough to find a connection? You will have to watch to find out.
Creator Pete Bridges has created something magical here. Ryan and Emily are complex humans, with each episode focusing on a date, which allows for a lot of two-hander scenes for Tonkin and Thwaites to shine.
An all-star cast that also includes Mitchell and Billing as support leads, Two Years Later is a charming drama full of heart that explores the complexities of dating.
