The Surfer Review

Over the weekend, Stan released its new original thriller The Surfer.

When the film begins, we meet The Surfer (Nicholas Cage) who has taken The Kid (Finn Little) for a surf to see the old family home on the cliffside that he grew up in. The Surfer has plans to purchase the house, clearly intending to lay down his roots and find some stability.

It seems like the perfect day, but things aren’t always that simple. The local gang, led by Scally (Julian McMahon), isn’t that welcoming to outsiders like The Surfer. Scally constantly repeats the mantra “don’t live here, don’t surf here”, warning him to leave the beach and never come back.

Naturally, The Surfer pays little attention to Scally’s threats, and the film really steps up a gear as we follow him for the few days around Christmas where the locals start messing with him.

Writer Thomas Martin delivers a psychological thriller that keeps the audience on their toes for its 100-minute runtime. Cage and McMahon deliver compelling performances alongside Justin Rosniak, Miranda Tapsell, and Nic Cassim.

Spend these cold winter evenings curled up with a thriller you won’t want to miss.
