More than 95 million people in the US alone were glued to their television screens on Friday, 17 June 1994 when football hero O.J. Simpson fled police in his white Ford Bronco.
This Sunday on TEN’s television drama event The People V. O.J. Simpson, viewers will be taken inside the Bronco to see what really happened.
After becoming a suspect in the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, O.J. was asked to surrender himself to the Los Angeles Police Department. But he had other plans.
After holding a gun to his head, O.J. jumped into his Ford Bronco with best friend Al “A.C.” Cowlings (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) behind the wheel. The LAPD declared Simpson a fugitive and the infamous car chase started, with a convoy of police cars and television helicopters following the White Bronco.
The slow-speed car chase along a Los Angeles highway is faithfully recreated, plus scenes with an acutely embarrassed LAPD and prosecutor Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson). O.J.’s lawyers Robert Shapiro (John Travolta) and Robert Kardashian (David Schwimmer) take centre stage, as they spin his story to the public and media.
The car chase became a media sensation and changed forever the way television covered breaking news stories. A survey by Nielsen and Sony in the US revealed the car chase was the sixth most memorable television moment in the past 50 years.
Everyone remembers the car chase. But only O.J. and A.C. were inside the car. Find out what really happened on The People V. O.J. Simpson.
