Stan has released its newest original in The F Ward.
The F Ward is the intern program at Pines Hospital on Sydney’s northern beaches, where money is tight and the staff are intriguing. Each of the young interns have stuffed up elsewhere, failed their first year as intern doctors and their first day at Pines Hospital is their last chance to salvage their careers while battling bureaucracy, facing their fears and frailties in life-or-death cases, and learning on the job in an underfunded, under staffed public hospital.
There is Jimmy (Ioane Sa’ula), who has a mystery illness that could derail his ambitions, dog obssed Ellie (Lola Bond), Josh (Alex Fitzalan), a party boy whose father Geoffrey (Jeremy Sims) is a star surgeon; former nurse Lisa (Emily Barclay); whip-smart, dry-humoured, Ava (Annie Boyle), with self-diagnosed recurrent ADHD; and wide-eyed, weak-stomached Yosef (Rishab Kern), who is determined to be a psychiatrist. Mentoring them are the F Ward founder, General Surgeon Gloria (Anna Friel), who’s hiding a few secrets, and her second-in-command, Senior Emergency Registrar Curtis (Dan Wyllie).
The cases are episodic and can range from injured kids, old people, and testicles that have become infected from spending too long in a chastity cage. The first episode has them struggling in a storm that tests the hospital’s ability to function smoothly.
The main cast are supported by a quality supporting cast that includes Matthew Backer, Justin Rosniak, Alex Dimitriades, Susie Porter and Maggie Dence.
Created by Kelsey Munro, who gave us Stan’s favorite Bump, and Dan Edwards, the F Ward has all the ingredients of a medical drama and engaging characters.
