The Echidna revealed as The Masked Singer kicks off

It was game, set, match for the Echidna who was unmasked before he could deliver his biggest serve on The Masked Singer Australia.

Disguised beneath a prickly Echidna costume, tennis great  Mark Philippoussis exposed his hidden love for music with a dulcet rendition of George Michael’s Faith, but it wasn’t enough to see him live to sing another day.

There’s no fooling guessing panellist Jackie O, who came in hot and had Philippoussis pegged from the start. Urzila Carlson and Dannii Minogue also suspected it was a tennis star in hiding, tossing up between Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios, while Dave Hughes nominated surfer Mick Fanning but was excited to see the reveal contained “the most handsome man that’s ever been produced in this country.”

When asked by host Osher Günsberg as to how he felt being the first eliminated from The Masked Singer Australia, Philippoussis said: “I was bummed, I’m gonna’ be honest, I am competitive. Who doesn’t love to sing? I love music, it was an incredible adventure.”

While Mark Philippoussis’ singing journey ends tonight, five other masked celebrities have made it through to the next round off the back of some very impressive performances.

The night’s first Face Off saw our curvaceous Goldfish take on Puppet’s bold swagger. Despite Goldfish making a splash with Sam Feldt’s Post Malone, it was Puppet that pulled on the heart strings and won over viewers with his crooning rendition of Elvis Presley’s Burning Love.

While Dragonfly certainly proved their pipes with Cyndi Lauper’s True Colours, it was Frillneck that got our entire guessing panel up and grooving and proved unstoppable with their firecracker performance of Bang Bang from dynamite trio Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.

And in the performance that ruled the end of Echidna’s run, Queen proved they are indeed royalty with their enchanting version of The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights.

Not only do you have a performance to analyse, but you now have a generous clue package to help you hazard your own guess at the celebrities hidden beneath the ornate Goldfish, Puppet, Dragonfly, Frillneck and Queen.
