Sydney Harbour Force gets April premiere on Discovery

Discovery’s new local series Sydney Harbour Force will premiere next month it has been announced.

The 10-part observational documentary follows a talented group of individuals who keep the busiest waterway in the southern hemisphere running smoothly.

Sydney Harbour is one of the most iconic waterways on the planet. The unique combination of striking natural features and man-made structures, cement its reputation as the most beautiful harbour in the world. Spanning 55 square kilometres, with 240 kilometres of shoreline, it’s most famous for the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, but it’s also an aquatic wonderland, industrial port, customs border, transport terminal, airport, entertainment complex, heritage site and an event space that draws over 40 million visitors from around the globe every year. The living and breathing waterway buzzes with daily activity; with ferries, tall ships, party boats, superyachts, cargo ships and warships; all sharing this spectacular location.

Discovery’s new local series, which also features rare access to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, peels back the picture-perfect postcard view to reveal the little-known side of the Harbour. Audiences can expect to see tensions mount as work is undertaken daily by key government agencies and commercial operations including; Police, Fisheries, Marine Rescue, Marine Construction, Engineering and Transport companies, Roads and Maritime and National Parks and Wildlife.

Every adrenaline-fuelled episode in the series is a mix of construction, rescue and salvage operations; from Port Authority Pilot’s boarding massive container ships in rough seas to tracking down illegal fishing, daring helicopter rescues and tagging gigantic Bull sharks just metres from swimmers.

The Harbour dictates the entire logistics of how Sydney is managed, bringing all these unique challenges with it. Multiple agencies, deploying over a dozen state of the art control rooms with hundreds of CCTV cameras, are required for the smooth operation of daily activities such as traffic and public transport flow, marine movements, and pedestrian safety.

Sydney Harbour Force premieres Monday, 11th April at 7.30pm AEST on Discovery.
