Today 7 and 7Plus begin its new streaming-first strategy with St Denis Medical.

St Denis is a small-town Oregon hospital with a big heart, run by administrator Joyce (Wendy McClendon-Covey). Its small ER is run by head nurse Alex (Allison Tolman), who works the hardest but also has the hardest time signing off for the day, and doctors Ron (David Alan Grier) and surgeon Bruce (Josh Lawson), each with their own unique annoying talent. Alex’s fellow nurses are also their own kind of quirky, from sheltered Matt (Mekki Leeper), to unruffled Serena (Kahyn Kim), and adaptable Val (Kaliko Kauahi).

The series’ pilot gives an idea of the dynamics at play, with Matt’s arrival on his first day and Alex’s dedication to her job, but each character gets their moment to shine in the double-episode premiere.

Bolstered by a cast of comedy veterans in Grier and Tolman, and the writing talents of Justin Spitzer, St Denis Medical is told in a mockumentary style that has the ability to grow into a much-loved workplace comedy with time.

3 Stars

St Denis Medical is available from 6:00pm Monday 3 February on 7Plus, and airs at 9:15pm on 7.
