Last night The Great Australian Spelling Bee went on an adventure through space.
With planets, stars and a space buggy, the spellers were captivated by their very own space universe and an interstellar-themed game of Show and Spell. The spellers used their imagination and speed to correctly guess and spell cosmic words provided by Pronouncer, Chris Edmund.
Divided into three teams of six, the spellers stepped up to their buzzers. Victoria’s Zeke got the Blue team off to an early lead, correctly guessing and spelling “constellation.” Fellow teammate Max from Queensland took the next points on the board with “astrophysics”, leaving the blue team just one point away from immunity.
Next up, William from NSW correctly spelt“meteorite” for Team Red, getting them on the board. Team Yellow’s Ava from South Australia followed with “intergalactic”.
Zoe from Queensland, representing Team Yellow, buzzed in with “celestial”, but was incorrect. Western Australian speller Josiefollowed with “cosmonaut”, launching her Team Blue into the Top 16.
With Team Red versus Team Yellow, Western Australian contestant Beau guessed “trajectory” for red. Arya from NSW countered with “syzygy” for Team Yellow, tying the score at two points apiece.
Hands raced for the buzzer for the last clue. Victoria’s Tristan got to the buzzer first and spelled “satellite”, sending Team Red into the Top 16.
Team Yellow’s Zoe from Queensland, NSW’ Arya, Victoria’s Hanna and Faiza, and South Australia’s Luca and Ava faced each other in a Spelling Bee, each eager to secure their spot in the competition.
Faiza stumbled on “audacity” and Arya tripped up on “chiffon”, sending the two girls home and putting Ava, Hanna, Zoe and Luca in the Top 16.
