Last night on The Great Australian Spelling Bee the Top 12 spellers competed in a winter wonderland-themed Show and Spell team challenge.
The visually spectacular challenge inspired the three teams whose task was to correctly guess and spell winter-related words to secure their team’s safe passage into the Top 10.
A quick buzz-in from Zoe (Queensland) saw the first points added to the scoreboard. Team Blue responded in force with two quick points from Zachary (NSW) swiftly spelling “crevasse” and Zeke (Victoria) with “barometer”.
Team Red’s Jessica (NSW) chimed in next with “cumulonimbus” and a speedy move by fellow teammate Ava (South Australia) saw the all-girls team of Ava, Zoe, Jessica and Annie (NSW) secure the first places in the Top 10.
Next a determined Zeke was too fast for youngster Rory (Queensland), sending himself, Zachary, Luca (South Australia) and Tristan (Victoria) all through to the Top 10.
Hanna (Victoria), Josie (Western Australia), Rory and Max all stepped up to the Spelling Bee for the final two spots left in the competition. After a tough battle, Rory stumbled on “polyester” and Josie tripped up on “behemoth”, ending their campaign and sending Hanna and Max through to the Top 10.
