Sometimes going back for a second helping of your favourite food can end badly, but is that the case with Santa Clarita Diet?
In Santa Clarita Diet’s first season, Joel (Timothy Olyphant) and Sheila (Drew Barrymore) are husband and wife realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenaged daughter Abby (Liv Hewson), until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending their lives down a road of death and destruction when she becomes a zombie.
Picking up right where we left off, Season 2 finds the Hammonds trying to adapt to Sheila’s now-advanced undead state. While the family has become markedly better at murder, the number of missing people in Santa Clarita is starting to pile up and it’s no longer going unnoticed. Meanwhile, the Hammonds are chasing the source of the virus so they can stop it from spreading and save humanity.
In the first half of the season (5 episodes) which were watched for this review, the show broadens its mythology and introduces a bunch of new characters to the world which cause both personal and professional conflicts for the Hammonds. The true highlight this season is the journey of the Hammonds’ confidant and next door neighbour, Eric (Skyler Gisondo).
The cast are having a ball within Victor Fresco’s world and it shows. Both Olyphant and Barrymore bring their comedic talents without taking away any of the drama within their new reality.
If you loved Season 1 you will devour this near perfect second serving. Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 premieres Friday on Netflix
