Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico to air next month

One of the world’s best-loved chefs and restaurateurs, Rick Stein, returns to Lifestyle FOOD next month as he takes on an exciting new journey in Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico.

In this brand new 7 x 60 minute series, Rick brings his unrivalled enthusiasm and trusted expertise to the fresh, flavoursome food of California and Mexico.

Exploring the food and culture from Northern California, to Baja and Mexico, Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico is inspired by a trip he made in the late 1960s: it was 1968, and having heard The Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreaming”, Rick was filled with a desire to embark on his own road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway to the Mexican Border and beyond.

Nearly 50 years later, Rick is back to retrace his steps, travelling from San Francisco down to the southernmost tip of Mexico, as he cooks, eats and experiences the region’s food at its very best and most diverse.

Whether it’s the farmer’s markets of California, full of sourdough bread, new season garlic and a profusion of citrus fruit; the prawns, snapper and tuna of the Pacific or the glorious street food and colourful markets of Mexico with their avocados, chillies, cheese and corn, this is part of the world packed with natural, healthy and satisfying ingredients.

In episode one, Rick enjoys sitting on the dock of the bay in San Francisco, tasting legendary dishes like the hangtown fry oyster pancake, a dish that can trace its origins to the California gold rush, which created the most famous Chinatown in the world. San Francisco is also the place where Rick got his very first taste of Mexican food all those years ago.

Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico is classic Rick Stein: vibrant dishes, expert travel tips and a dash of art and culture thrown in for good measure.

Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico premieres  Mondays at 8.30pm AEDT From February 12Only on Lifestyle FOOD
