Overcompensating Review

Today Prime Video releases its new original series Overcompensating.

Benny Scanlen (Benito Skinner), a closeted former football player and homecoming king, arrives at Yates college to start a new chapter of his life. He becomes fast friends with Carmen (Wally Barma), a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs after a shattering event. The pair attempt to hook up with one another, but it’s very clear these two are just meant to be friends.

Meanwhile Benny’s sister Grace (Mary Beth Barone) has dumped her best friend for her boyfriend Peter (Adam Dimarco), who is in the college’s secret society. At first glance he seems like a good guy, but like everyone else, he is hiding part of himself. And it is these flawed four characters that we follow throughout the course of this first season.

Added to the series is Carmen’s roommate Hailee (Holmes), who is brash but in a comedic way, and Miles (Rish Shah), a Brit that Benny can’t stop crossing paths with.

Creator and writer Benito Skinner has delivered something special here with flawed characters who aren’t perfect but are full of laughs and are a reminder of the importance of friendship.

All the cast are given memorable performances, and it is clear that every character’s arc gives them all a chance to shine.
