This sounds a lot like Australia’s Greatest Athlete from a few years ago.
Some of Australia’s favourite elite athletes will learn just how gruelling it is to be an Ironman/Woman when they battle it out in a series of physical challenges for the inaugural Nutri-Grain Sports Star Challenge.
Using the very best in scientific testing, professional sports stars including cricketer Simon Katich, Adelaide Crows captain Patrick Dangerfield, Olympic hurdler Michelle Jenneke, State of Origin and Newcastle Knights NRL player Kurt Gidley, Sydney Swans player Lewis Jetta and recently retired NRL player and Footy Show favourite Beau Ryan will see if they have what it takes to make it in one of the world’s most punishing sports – over land and sea.
During this two-part special each athlete will be paired with an Ironman – Ky Hurst, Matt Poole, Kendrick Louis, Ali Day, Tanyn Lyndon or Ironwoman Courtney Hancock – allowing viewers to see them up against each other in “the lab” and on the beach in a series of challenges that will test their fitness, strength, endurance and adaptability to the exhausting competition of Ironman.
Physical challenges include the Beep Test, a traditional test on soft sand to test peak running performance, the Wade Test, which includes a short run and swim through the shore break encompassing the attributes of the start of an Ironman race, as well as a Board and Ski Paddle Test.
This is followed by an Ironman finale where the athletes are pitted against each other in a 50m swim leg and 100m board paddle before being joined by their mentors to complete the final 200m ski leg on a double ski.
