Neighbours welcomes Makenzie to the hood

Neighbours continues to break new ground with their newest arrival Mackenzie.

Announced back in March, viewers finally met Mackenzie Hardgrave (Georgie Stone) on Friday night. Introduced by Susan (Jackie Woodburne) to Yashvi (Olivia Junkeer) and Harlow (Jemma Donovan), Mackenzie quickly made her mark and a new teen friendship group is soon established.

What makes Mackenzie such a groundbreaking introduction to Erinbsorough is her representation for the transgender community. Georgie, who approached the show’s producers to suggest a trans character be introduced, is only the second trans actress to portray a trans character on Australian television.

Georgie has been working with the writing team to ensure that Mackenzie’s journey reflects a genuine transgender experience, which viewers will see play out over the coming weeks.

It’s fantastic to see Neighbours continuing to take positive steps forward in their storylines and characters, something which has lacked in Australia soaps for far too long. It’ll be interesting to see what they have in store for Mackenzie and the impact she will have on the trans community.

There’s a lot more to come for Mackenzie with a big question looming – why has she come to Erinsborough, and what connection is she about to reveal?

Neighbours airs 6:30pm weeknights on 10 Peach
