Little Miss cupcake departs MKR

An alfresco sudden death cook-off marks the end of SA’s Jenna and Joanna… but they get a second chance in Comeback Kitchen this Sunday night.

It was a heart-wrenching defeat in Perth for Jenna and Joanna tonight, who were beaten in their second sudden death cook-off by Victorian husband and wife Kerrie and Craig.

While mum-of-two Joanna fought back the tears usually the forte of her teammate, ‘Little Miss Cupcake’ Jenna, her waterworks turned into tears of happiness when she learned of her second chance in Comeback Kitchen this Sunday night.

Their entry into Comeback Kitchen comes on the heels of a one-point loss to Kerrie and Craig tonight, with just 34/60 for their three-course meal of marron with creamed leek and dill oil; poached pork belly with green beans and brandy sauce; and berry and apple charlotte.

They were off to a great start with their ambitious menu, with their entrée loved by all judges.

Karen Martini said: “They’ve shown great respect for the product because that marron is cooked so perfectly.”

Joanna used a traditional Italian method of cooking the pork belly in milk and stock and the result was “beautifully meltingly tender with a real sweet flavour” according to Liz Egan.

But their beans, pumpkin puree and sauce let the dish down and Pete Evans said: “I don’t think this dish is anywhere as good as their entre. The only thing I like is the pork. I’m not enjoying the puree it which is a shame because it could’ve been a good dish.”

Craig’s perfectly cooked venison with braised red cabbage and parsnip puree bought the teams back up on par after their entrée of baked goats cheese custard with asparagus was left lacking.

But both teams experienced problems with their desserts not setting in time. As a result, the judges were not kind.

“I think it looks like Ken and Barbie had a dinner party and this is what you would get,” said Colin of the girls efforts, adding, “unless it was cooked by someone named Charlotte it isn’t a charlotte.”

While Joanna choked back tears as she admitted “all our dreams have come crashing down”, she declared the My Kitchen Rules journey “an amazing experience”.

“I’m walking away with a best friend and I couldn’t imagine having done this competition with anyone else.”

But there’s one last test in store for Jenna and Joanna when they walk in the doors of Comeback Kitchen this Sunday night.

My Kitchen Rules airs this Sunday April 14 at 6:30pm for a special 90 minute episode of Comeback Kitchen, and continues Monday-Wednesday at 7:30pm on Seven
