Veteran US actress Jeanne Cooper, best known as matriarch Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless, has died, aged 84.

Her son, actor Corbin Bernsen, announced the death on his Facebook page, writing that his mother had died in her sleep.

Cooper was the longest-serving cast member ofThe Young and the Restless, and continued to appear on the show until her death. She joined the show in late 1973, about six months after CBS began broadcasting it.

The Young and the Restless is taped about six weeks in advance of US broadcasts, and it has not been determined how her character will be written out of the show.
