Today, Binge unleashes its first original film in How to Make Gravy.
How to Make Gravy tells the story of the Morris family, when it’s the 21st of December and Joe Morris (Daniel Henshell) is on edge, stuck in prison serving an 18-month sentence. All he wants to do is see his family, made up of wife Rita (Agathe Roussell), who is exhausted juggling their three kids, twin daughters Frank (Rose Statham) and Dolly (Izzy Westlake), and son Angus (Jonah Wren Phillips), who is trying to make sense of the world without his father.
Moving in to help the family is Dan (Brenton Thwaites), who has only just sorted himself out, and things really couldn’t be more strained for the family, which also includes Stella (Kate Mulvany), who has a turbulent relationship with Rodger (Damion Herriman). And brothers Gary (Eugene Gilfedder) and Murray (Kym Gyngell) trek from Queensland for the impending celebrations.
Meanwhile, Joe keeps getting in trouble and using his fists. The prison’s resident troublemaker Red (Kieran Darcy-Smith) has Joe in his sights, but a helping hand from kitchen leader Noel (Hugo Weaving) might just be what Joe needs to stay on the path to freedom.
With Paul Kelly’s blessing, Meg Washington and Nick Waterman have adapted one of his most prolific songs, creating a 2-hour film that covers some serious subject matter and delivered some wonderful performances from its lead cast. Plus, there’s a few musicians popping up, like Adam Briggs and singer/songwriter Brendan Maclean, just to name a few.
How to Make Gravy is a strong film and a fresh take on an Aussie classic that more than delivers as one of the best films of 2024.
