This week, Disney+ is unleashing a new crime procedural High Potential.

When the series begins, we meet Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), single mother to pouting teen Ava (Amirah J), ultra-nerdy Elliot (Matthew Lamb), and baby Chloe. Morgan arrives at the LAPD early in the mornings, when the offices are completely empty, and blasts her music before getting to work on the cleaning. But when she inadvertently knocks over a cast file, spilling its contents all over the place, she notices something suspicious in one of the crime scene photos and leaves a note for detectives.

Morgan’s helpful input doesn’t sit well with Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), who tracks her down. In their confrontation, Morgan discloses that she possesses ‘high intellectual potential’, allowing her to see things junior Detectives Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie) and Lev ‘Oz’ Ozdill (Deniz Akdeniz) have overlooked.

While Karadec wants to arrest her for tampering with evidence, it’s Lieutenant Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) who decides that bringing Morgan in on the investigation could be beneficial.

Created by Drew Goddard, High Potential doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel for crime shows, but it’s helped by interesting cases. But it’s Olson’s performance as Morgan that makes it one of the must-see new US dramas.

High Potential premieres January 23 on Disney+, with new episodes dropping weekly.
