Netflix says farewell to its much-loved book adaptation of Heartstopper with Heartstopper Forever.
It’s Nick’s (Kit Connor) final year of high school, and a lot has changed. No longer a wallflower, Charlie (Joe Locke) is running for Head Boy, trying to form a club for queer students and he’s managing his eating disorder, and as Charlie flourishes Nick hits the spiral of how useful he is to Charlie.
Growing up is tough and our central couple aren’t alone- Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao) can’t seem to get on the same page, but is it the end? There are key but small appearances by Charlie’s sister, Tori (Jenny Walser), Nick’s mother, Sarah (Anna Maxwell Martin, taking over for Olivia Colman), as well as Mr. Ajayi (Fisayo Akinade), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) and Issac (Tobie Donovan).
When Heartstopper launched in 2022, the adaptation of Alice Oseman exploded with popularity. Four years later the film closes out a solid adaptation, exploring what happens when leaving high school and having to say goodbye to friends.
Heartstopper has always been Charlie and Nick’s story, and with it being a nearly 2 hour film rather than an 8 episode season of 30 minute episodes, Oseman devotes most of the film to their story, giving the supporting characters limited appearances, allowing Locke and Connor one final chance to shine. Another highlight is Finney’s portrayal of a very passionate speech on Trans rights.
