Great Australian Spelling Bee Finds it’s top 16

Last night’s Great Australian Spelling Bee had it all and farewelled four favourites.

Despite failing to get a word wrong in the second challenge of the evening, viewer favourite Tej, 9, was relegated to the Individual Spelling Bee after losing a tie-breaker to competition front-runner Grace. The eight-year-old pocket rocket from Wollongong was too fast for Tej in Flashcards, forcing her friend into a final spell-off with five others.

Only two spellers from the remaining six could advance to the Top 16 but Tej stumbled on the word “theorem”. It was one of several tricky words to trip-up spellers on the night.

Holly, 13, from Queensland came unstuck spelling “querulous”. Jack, 11, from Victoria was beaten by “cudgerie”. Ryan, 10, also from Victoria got “chromatic” incorrect.

Victoria now has four spellers remaining in the competition, Queensland and South Australia three, Western Australia one, while New South Wales leads the pack with five.

The Great Australian Spelling Bee airs Monday And Tuesday At 7.30pm on Ten
