It’s the day every Neighbours fan has been dreading – production will officially end this year.
After the news earlier this year that Channel 5 in the UK would stop airing Neighbours after their summer, fans have waited for further confirmation on the show’s future. The sad news was announced today.
“Network 10 confirms that Neighbours will not air on 10Peach beyond September 2022,” a Network 10 spokesperson revealed.
“Today, Fremantle confirmed that Neighbours will cease production in June, after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes. This difficult decision came after the search for an alternative UK broadcast partner proved unsuccessful.”
The official Neighbours social media accounts broke the news to fans that “we simply have no option but to rest the show.”
“To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.”
Since the news broke of Channel 5 dropping the soap, fans have rallied to show support for the beloved show, urging other UK broadcasters to pick up the popular drama. A fan petition has amassed over 62,700 signatures, while the hashtag #SaveNeighbours has trended on Twitter in both countries on multiple occasions.
Production will cease on June 10, with the final episodes airing on Australian screens in September.
On a truly personal level, as someone who has been a regular visitor to Erinsborough for close to 25 years, this cancellation hits hard. Nine of those years have been in the media landscape and I’m forever grateful for all the support from the many cast, crew and fans who have shared articles over the years.
As we head towards the final show, we have been promised plenty of unmissable drama and a few returning faces. The end may be coming, but these final months are going to be jam-packed.
Neighbours airs 6:30pm Monday-Thursday on 10Peach.
