A Ramsay Street favourite is about to face a difficult road ahead as they are diagnosed with cancer.
The following contains spoilers for tonight’s episode, so catch up on 10 Play or read at your own risk.
Did Neighbours just confirm its long-teased death? The answer is still elusive, but after tonight’s episode, there’s a strong possibility that we could say a sad goodbye to Sonya Rebecchi (Eve Morey), who is diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer.
The news comes after heading to hospital following days of worrying symptoms, mainly stomach pain, which lead to Sonya collapsing on Friday while tending to the new Friendship Tree. After undergoing an ultrasound last night, Sonya learns that she has a cyst on her ovary that’s to be removed immediately.
The surgery goes ahead with success, but once Sonya has woken up, she’s visited by a medical oncologist who reveals that she has cancer. Sadly, the cancer is advanced, having already spread severely, to her gastrointestinal track, liver and brain – the prognosis isn’t looking good. But Sonya is determined to fight like hell.
It’s so great to see Neighbours tackle the issue of Ovarian Cancer given how much of a silent killer it is, and it was also great to learn that Alice’s actions were affectively a misdirection, with Sonya suffering symptoms long before Alice arrived.
Whatever the outcome of this story, tonight has proved we are in for an acting masterclass from both Ryan Moloney and Eve as it all unfolds. Maybe keep the tissues on hand, because it’s going to be an emotional ride for our favourite Rebecchi’s.
Neighbours airs 6:30pm weeknights on 10 Peach.
