Now that all the returning nominees are out of the way let’s kick off the newbies with Essie Davis.
Essie Davis started her career in the industry in 1993 with the film The Custodian alongside Aussies Anthony LaPaglia and Hugo Weaving. After a few more film roles she made her first television appearance on Water Rats in 1997 as a senior detective which was a guest role . Other guest roles include Murder Call, Halifax f.p. and short lived cop drama Young Lions.
In 2003 she gained a more mainstream fan base when she appeared as Maggie in the sci fi hits The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Later that year she appeared as Beth in the telemovie After The Deluge for which she won a Best Actress in a Supporting or Guest Role in a Television Drama or Comedy AFI award. Her next role was in the Oscar nominated film Girl With The Pearl earring alongside Scarlett Johansson. She then had roles on the big screen in Australian films Charlotte’s Web, Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger and Australia.
Essie is probably best known for the TV roles she undertook in 2011. First up she played Dolly Pickles in the 20 million dollar adaptation of Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet for Showcase which saw her nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama at the AACTA Awards in 2012. After Cloudstreet she then took on the of role of script writer Anouk in the ABC series The Slap based on the novel by Christos Tsiolkas.
2012 saw her take on the role of crime solver Phryne Fisher the series was so successful it completed a second season in 2013.
On Sunday Essie will be up for her first Most Popular Actress award as well as her first chance at Gold.
