Joining him in the elimination challenge was Social Media Manager, Patricia, whose Red Velvet Cheesecake and Brownie lacked the wow factor. “When I have red velvet cake, I normally have cream cheese icing,” Zumbo said. “I couldn’t see where the Franken part was.”
The pair battled for survival in the Zumbo Test, where they had to recreate Zumbo’s toughest challenge yet. Underneath the Dessert Dome, Zumbo unveiled The Franken-Zumbo – an epic creation combining five desserts into one.
The dessert makers marvelled at the creation, in which they were given three hours to replicate. “I’m hit with a 1000 different flavours,” Patricia said, noting the layer of brownie, lemon tart, ricotta pancake and raspberry gel encased in a pavlova meringue with crème chantilly and petite macarons.
Patricia risked Zumbo’s wrath by throwing away his famous macaron recipe and using her own after her first batch failed. “These macarons are going to be better than Zumbo’s!” she proclaimed.
The risk paid off with Patricia snaring victory; receiving a combined score of 12/20 from the judges. “You didn’t follow my recipe, but I love it,” Zumbo said.
Peter, 57, was again cursed by the setting gods, scoring 10 points in total. “Everything oozed out,” Rachel said. “And all the flavours merged into one swampy taste.”
Since leaving the Dessert Factory, Peter has followed his sweet dream, wholesaling his dessert creations. “It was a beautiful experience for me,” he said. “I’m sad to be leaving but I learnt a lot. Desserts! That is my dream.”
