Stan has today announced that the gripping new series Sweetbitter ’ and Vida will premiere on in May.
Sweetbitter , based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Stephanie Danler, tells the story of Tess, played by Ella Purnell, (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Maleficent, Kick Ass 2), a 22-year-old who arrives in New York City ready to pursue a new life. When she finds herself interviewing for a position at one of the best restaurants in the city, she thinks she’s found a steady income and a safe place to wait. But Tess is quickly intoxicated by the chaotic, adrenalized world behind-the-scenes, tasting expensive wine, exploring dive bars, and learning who she can trust.
In this first season, we follow Tess along the path of the L train circa 2006: the prestigious Manhattan restaurant where she serves an upscale clientele, an industry dive bar, a corner bodega in Williamsburg, and an East Village apartment with a bathtub in the kitchen. She came to the city without a friend or ambition because she wanted more from her life. Underneath the oysters and champagne is a love letter to the way New York City changes and can change you. But it’s the people Tess meets at the restaurant who end up marking her for life. SweetBitteris not only Tess’s story—it is also the story of the backwaiters, servers, bartenders, and dishwashers as they navigate friendship, intimacy, lust and betrayal. Her co-workers become her family, and through them she finds a degree of belonging that she’s never encountered before.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Stephanie Danler, SweetBitterstars Ella Purnell as “Tess” in the series, alongside Caitlin FitzGerald (UnREAL, Masters of Sex, current season of Stan’s Younger), Tom Sturridge (Far from the Madding Crowd, The Hollow Crown), Paul Sparks(The Greatest Showman, House of Cards, The Girlfriend Experience & Boardwalk Empire) Evan Jonigkeit (Broad City, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Girls),Eden Epstein (In Between Men, Blind), Jasmine Mathews (Blue Bloods, Heathers) and Daniyar (Claws, Scandal, Payday). Danler serves as creator, executive producer and writer on the series. Stu Zicherman serves as writer and showrunner and executive producer along with Plan B.
VIDA is a series focusing on two Mexican-American sisters, Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn (Melissa Barrera), from the Eastside of Los Angeles who couldn’t be more distanced or different from one another. Matters get complicated as the two young women are confronted by secrets of the past and forced to face the truth about their mother’s identity. These secrets drive the sisters to reunite with people from their childhood and confront their neighbourhood’s changing cultural landscape.
