Zumbo brings out his A game

Love and chocolate were in the air on Zumbo’s Just Desserts last night.

The 10 remaining dessert makers had to make a romantic dessert for their Sweet Sensations Task using chocolate.

Insurance Broker Ali was named Dessert Maker of the Day for her elegantly plated White Chocolate and Rose Mousse. “Your dessert was tasty and looked amazing,” Zumbo said.

Patricia was in the bottom two again after her Triple Chocolate Layered Mousse failed to seduce. “The flavours are really nice but the dark chocolate mousse is almost frozen,” Rachel Khoo said.

Joining her in the elimination challenge was no-nonsense mum Kate, whose White Chocolate Panna Cotta was deemed too simple. “There’s not enough going on,” Zumbo said. “It’s just a panna cotta and a coulis with a tuille.”

The pair battled for survival in the Zumbo Test, where Zumbo unveiled his most mind-blowing creation yet – the Lovenbouche. The croquembouche is the Holy Grail for every patissier but this was no ordinary croquembouche.

They were given three hours to recreate the towering creation made of 100 profiteroles filled with chocolate custard and dipped in amber caramel, set between almond nougatine and decorated with red isomalt hearts.

Patricia struggled to create identically shaped profiteroles giving her Lovenbouche a lean but it was nothing compared to Kate who almost gave the judges a heart attack after carrying her leaning tower of love to the Dessert Bar for scoring. “I can’t watch,” Rachel said.

Kate was met with thunderous applause after managing to transport her 45-degree leaning sweet creation intact. “Kate 1. Gravity 0,” she said. “Moving it was the most terrifying thing I’ve done in my life.”

It was worth the effort with the Ballarat battler taking victory with a combined score of 14/20. “Your choux had a great texture,” Zumbo said. “You should be very proud of yourself.”

Sydney social media manager, Patricia, left the Dessert Factory scoring 10 points. The eternal optimist is still living life to the fullest after receiving a kidney and pancreas transplant five years ago. “I’ve been through some really tough things in my life,” said, Patricia, who is studying to be a pastry chef at TAFE. “This has challenged me beyond what I thought was possible and I’ve gotten through it. I’m excited for what lies ahead.”

Don’t miss Zumbo’s Just Desserts next week to see the dessert that stops the nation. It’s Kids Party Cakes on Monday at 7.30pm and on Tuesday 7.30pm Zumbo unveils his jaw-dropping gravity defying creation.
