Legendary Comedian Joan Rivers passed away this morning aged 81.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” daughter Melissa said in a statement. “She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.

Joan Rivers began her career in the 60’s and 70’s with apperences on The Tonight Show and The Ed Sullivan Show preforming Stand up comedy on the show.  In the 1980’s she began as  permanent guest-host for her mentor Johnny Carson on NBC’s The Tonight Show. That job  lasted until 1986  when Joan left to do her own show nch The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers which lasted untill 1987.

After that came a daytime show that ran for six years and scored her a Daytime Emmy in 1990 for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Most recently she had  became known for  her  polarizing staple of red-carpet commentary and a host of reality shows.
