House Rules reveals it’s final four

With not a wink of sleep, weary SA parents Brooke and Michelle scored their first victory this week on House Rules , winning the 24-hour-fix-up challenge with a score of 17 out of 20 from the judges.

Choosing the biggest zone in their 1920s Californian bungalow to fix, Brooke and Michelle immediately set their sights on modernising the dated turquoise and burnt orange colour palette  Rose and Rob had splashed their living room, hallway and laundry walls with.

“You definitely chose the right zone, you used your time and your money really well. This was your style at its absolute best,” judge Wendy Moore told them.

The freshly painted and balanced wall colours paired with Michelle’s DIY art project created the funky edge their original house rule had demanded and fitted perfectly into their living room zone. “What a treat your living room was – it was so modern and funky, which was right on your house rules,” said judge Joe Snell.

Luke and Cody came in a close second with eights from the judges for changing the wood paneling in their bathroom and re-channeling George Clooney in Cody’s bedroom.

“Two of the decisions you made in Cody’s room made a really big difference; it made it feel bigger replacing the carpet with timber floor and extending that hunk of timber you used for your bedhead to include the shelf. The bar was also so much better and I have to say it is definitely more George Clooney,” commented Joe.

Claire and Hagan’s introduction of a privacy screen in their ensuite was a huge hit with the judges, as was the DIY timber work around the balustrade, which added the house rule of industrial warehouse to their home while ensuring the staircase was safe for their two children.

“What really won me over was your fabulous sliding door across the ensuite, what a fabulous solution; it not only solved the big problem of the ensuite but it also looked amazing,” said Wendy awarding an eight. Joe scored them seven.

Just one point separated the bottom two teams with Fil and Joe narrowly escaping elimination at the expense of reno rookies Nancy and Daniel.

Fil and Joe whose ambitious fix-up plan included the living room, hallway and a main bathroom with serious layout issues were saved with a seven from Wendy who told them: “I have to say, from the outset I think you chose the wrong zone. I felt that the zone had some fundamental planning issues that I didn’t think you could change in 24 hours. But I think you absolutely have an eye for creating a beautiful room and this is the one thing that really impressed me.”

In sending Nancy and Daniel home with a combined judges’ score of 12 out of 20, Joe told the NSW team: “I think it’s telling that the most exciting thing in your zone was Daniel’s artwork and the reason that is exciting is to create something original like that, you need passion and that’s the passion we really needed to see in the rest of the zone.”

While sad to leave, Nancy was excited about their future in their new home, while Daniel said: “We thank every team for the work they did on our house.”

The 24-hour-fix-up challenge scoreboard was:

24 hour fix up

The four remaining  teams are set to embrace the winter cold as they head outdoors to transform the gardens and exteriors starting this Sunday, at 7pm on Seven .
