House Rules Completes Home Renovation Phase

House Rules Completes Home Renovation Phase

Last night contestants came face to face with the judges for the first time after transforming Toad and Mandy’s tired old farmhouse into an elegant homestead.

House Rules
Rule 1 Turn our tired old lady into an elegant homestead
Rule 2 Colour with jewel tones
Rule 3 Get dark and moody in an art deco master suite
Rule 4 Make a big, blokey butcher’s kitchen
Rule 5 Create a contemporary but classic, bathroom
Bonus Room Rule Make the ceiling shine in a swish sitting room

SA Jess & Jared: (Entry & Laundry)

·       Entry:  The judges were full of praise. LLB: “Australia, I am absolutely in love. It’s been beautifully coaxed into the contemporary in a stunning and absolutely confident way.” Wendy loved the fretwork, declaring “this feels right.”

·       Laundry:  The repurposed concrete trough sink won unanimous praise.

Score 25/30

QLD Josh & Brandon: (Bathroom, boot room & hallway)

·       Hallway: LLB thought the wallpaper was awful calling it “grandmother’s knickers” but Wendy and Drew believed the white brightened up a dark space.

·       Boot room:  The only thing working was the actual boot stand with Wendy declaring the room a “missed opportunity.”

·       Bathroom: LLB thought it was lovely and “bang on for the house rules.” Wendy agreed, however Drew was not impressed.

Score 16/30

WA Chiara & David: (Scullery & Lenny’s bedroom)

·       Scullery: “Functionally fantastic” in Wendy’s opinion, but “it just doesn’t look nice.” Drew agreed calling it “dull”.

·       Lenny’s bedroom: The judges were unanimous in their praise as Wendy declared the room “bold, graphic and fun.”

Score 21/30

QLD Mel & Dave: (Dining room & Layla’s bedroom)

·       Layla’s bedroom: Wendy loved the room; Drew called it “cheerful” and LLB thought the exposed brickwork dollhouse was “a triumph.” They declared both bedrooms successful and worked well together.

·       Dining room: The judges were in love.  LLB called this “decorating onto a Jedi level.” Wendy: “Right up there with some of the best rooms I’ve ever seen.” Drew lavished high praise on the centrepiece ceiling, while at Homebase LLB stated Mel and Dave “had moved Australian taste forward.”

Score 30/30

NSW Kim & Michelle: (Kitchen, master bedroom & bonus room)

·       Kitchen:  Wendy loved it! LLB declared the blue “genius” and Drew thought the stainless and white hit the house rules, but the island was too small. Wendy questioned if they have done enough.

·       Master bedroom: LLB thought they did do textiles well; Wendy loved the art deco wallpaper but “things fall apart after that.”  The wardrobe was out of context in Drew’s eyes.

·       Bonus room: The ceiling did shine as per the house rules, but LLB wanted to see the rich, inky blue of the kitchen. Wendy: “This, to me, feels like Kim and Michelle at their worst, in the room where they had to be at their best.”

Score 17/30

VIC Leigh & Kristie (Ensuite & loungeroom)

·       Loungeroom:  The judges agreed the picture window with built-in seat was a winner, as well as the desk but the love stopped there. LLB cried foul with the paint “the colour of murder.” Wendy agreed: “It’s just not working for me.”

·       Ensuite: LLB called it a “scheme of aggression” when the space should be about calm and indulgence. The silver wall was a miss, but the sink and basin were perfect. LLB saw “genius” in the tilework hitting the dark art deco and jewel tone of emerald.

Update June 26 Toad and Mandy arrived home and the first team was eliminated so lets get cracking.

SA Jess & Jared: (Entry & Laundry)

Entry:  They were wowed with the beautiful entry and the fretwork. Toad was emotional to see a photo of his grandad in the entry saying “I can’t believe this is our house mate.”

Laundry: It was perfect in practicality and the concrete trough sink and tiles were spot on.

Score 10/10

VIC Leigh & Kristie (Loungeroom & ensuite)

Loungeroom:  The alcove window seat was a special place where the twins could watch Toad working on the farm. The study nook was a good use of space and their cowhide statement piece hit the spot, but the risk with the deep purple wall didn’t pay off. Toad thought it was a little bit unfinished.

Ensuite: Mandy “Wow.” The dark green tiles and ceiling tile feature was a hit, but all the patterns together were perhaps too much going on.

Score 7/10

QLD Mel & Dave: (Dining room & Layla’s bedroom)

Dining room: They were blown away by the pitched roof ceiling and table. Toad: “That is homestead, you are feeding the Queen.” A big tick for the elegant homestead rule.

Layla’s bedroom: They loved the dollhouse fireplace and graphic patterns but a wardrobe with no door wasn’t practical for Layla.

Score 9/10

WA Chiara & David: (Scullery & Lenny’s bedroom)

Lenny’s bedroom: Both kid’s rooms flowed well, and they loved the mountains painted on the wall but the built-in robe was in an awkward corner. Toad “They’ve ticked the rules.”

Scullery: The statement piece needed a bigger space to shine but the scullery was like a second kitchen.

Score 9/10

QLD Josh & Brandon: (Boot room, bathroom & hallway)

Boot room:  Mandy loved the boot room.Hallway: The yellow wall broke up the white. Toad thought it was beautiful. They loved the wallpaper and built in artworks.

Bathroom: The classic bath, tapware and tiles were all on mark.

Score 10/10

NSW Kim & Michelle: (Kitchen, master bedroom & bonus room)

Kitchen: They were in disbelief it was their kitchen. Mandy “Oh my god.” Toad: “That is beautiful babe.”

Master bedroom: It ticked the rules with the art deco wallpaper, jewel tones and dark and moody vibe but the wardrobe was too small and the bedside tables, although art deco, were not functional.

Bonus room: The sitting room ceiling shone like the house rule asked. They questioned the artwork without realising the old lino had been found in the flooring. The statement piece was too big in the sitting room.

Score 8/10

BONUS ROOM: PASS + 5 POINTS

At the end of phase 1 the leaderboard looks like

Competitive couple Leigh & Kristie are headed home and eliminated from the competition. While Leigh & Kristie return to their children and enjoy their amazing renovated home, Kristie’s parting words shot a warning to the remaining competitors: “Do not trust Mel and Dave. They are as sneaky as it comes.”
