The average Australian consumes around 120kg of meat per year, approximately double the recommended intake. It is estimated nine million cattle, 13 million sheep, 20 million lambs, six million pigs and half a billion chickens are killed for food consumption each year.

In 2011, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg challenged himself to only eat meat from animals he had killed himself. Speaking to Fortune magazine, Zuckerberg said: “Many people forget that a living being has to die for you to eat meat, so my goal revolves around not letting myself forget that and being thankful for what I have.”

To truly appreciate the meat we eat, should we all be expected to kill the animals that end up on our dinner plates?
